Saffavids and Shi’ism

The founder of the Saffavid dynasty was Shah Ismail, who forced the Iranian population to convert to Shi’ism and made it the official religion of the state. He was a contradictory man. On the one hand he was cruel and bloodthirsty but on the other gentle mannered who was loved by his soldiers to a point of worship. He is a rare type of person who had both positive and negative qualities and one who believed he was acting on divine orders through revelations.

When forcing Shi’ism on the Iranian people he believed he was pushed and guided by the 12 Imams and that there was no difference between him and the Mehdi – the 12th and hidden Imam – because he too was infallible. He was a Sufi who believed he reached the stage of “kashf” (unveiling) – a divine connection with God - and Sufism played a central role in his actions.

When he wanted to force the population of Tabriz to convert he was advised against it by his aides who told him one third of the population was Sunni and that they would not allow the cursing of the first three caliphs in their mosques. His reply was “I am ordered to do this. Allah and the 12 infallible Imams are with me, I am not afraid of anyone, if I find those who object I will take out my sword with the help of Allah and will not leave any of them alive”.
